"Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley put on an amazing show in his only appearance in Edmonton, overcoming the shortcomings of the venue.
His words were lost in the echo of the Kinsmen Fieldhouse, Journal reviewer Graham Hicks wrote.
But the power with which they were delivered, was awesome
If you were standing on the main floor and shorter than five feet eight inches you could not see Marley or his band,.
but the concert was an experience you'd never forget, he added.
Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal were the only Canadian stops on his Survival Tour.
Marley is a mystic, a powerful man with mesmerizing stage presence.
Trance-like, Marley would slide up to the mike, moving in an ongoing reptilian dance.
His hair, done in dreadlocks, twirled around his face.
During instrumental breaks, he always sustained this fluid, slithery ritual movement.
The Rastafarian (a member of a religious sect in Jamaica that worships the late Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia),
who introduced reggae to North America, performed before a packed hall of 7,300 people.
He and his band, The Wailers (10 musicians and two backup singers) played for an hour delivering one hit after another including :
I Shot the Sheriff; No Woman, No Cry; Running, Running Away From Yourself; and Exodus.
After briefly disappearing into his dressing room, Marley returned and played for another half-hour.
The encore included :
Kinky Reggae, Jammin, Stir It Up and Get Up, Stand Up.
It was a marvellous concert. Hicks concluded.
The next time, let us hope promoter Wayne Henkelman can obtain the Coliseum."
