Island Records Label History :
Chris Blackwell founded Island Records in 1959 with 100 livres as starting fund.
The label name came from Alec Waugh' novel 'Island In The Sun'
it first succes was 'Boogie in My Bones' a ska song by Layren Aitken
who stayed on the Jamaican Charts for 11 weeks.
The first album released by island was the release of Lance Heywood 'at the half moon hotel ' who featured Ernest Ranglin
In 1962 , Chris Blackwell transfered island to London in England for that he contracted a 5.000 dollar loan.
He said : 'i went to the UK rather than the US because there was a huge jamaican population'
Initially island marketed it's records at sound systems in Brixton, Notting Hill.
In August 1972 Island signed Bob Marley and The Wailers maybe their most significant signing
In late 1972 , blackwell gave the group 4.000 livres
the rest is musical history s 'Catch A Fire' was the first album recorded in jamaica with stereo sound
When asked about that Chris Blackwell said :
'everybody said that i was crazy, how the wailers were not reliable bad people who would rip me off'
the initial 4.000 livres turned into millions
He sold the label in 1989 to A&M for an indisclosed amount of millions.
